The Century of the Self is an acclaimed documentary by filmmaker Adam Curtis

Episode Three: There is a Policeman Inside All Our Heads: He Must Be Destroyed

Synopsis

In the 1960s, a radical group of psychotherapists challenged the influence of Freudian ideas in America. They were inspired by the ideas of Wilhelm Reich, a pupil of Freud's, who had turned against him and was hated by the Freud family. He believed that the inner self did not need to be repressed and controlled. It should be encouraged to express itself
Out of this came a political movement that sought to create new beings free of the psychological conformity that had been implanted in people's minds by business and politics.
This programme shows how this rapidly developed in America through self-help movements like Werber Erhard's Erhard Seminar Training - into the irresistible rise of the expressive self: the Me Generation.
But the American corporations soon realised that this new self was not a threat but their greatest opportunity. It was in their interest to encourage people to feel they were unique individuals and then sell them ways to express that individuality. To do this they turned to techniques developed by Freudian psychoanalysts to read the inner desires of the new self.

Surplus.-Terrorized Into Being Consumers

Synopsis

Why is the lifestyle of consumerism a source of such rage today? How come the privilege of buying goods does not automatically lead to happiness? Why all this emptiness despite our wealth? Surplus approach is to portray this issue from an emotional rather than a factual perspective, shot in the US, India, China, Italy, Sweden, Hungary, Canada and Cuba during three years. It is the result of a complicated editing process by talented music composer/editor/percussionist Johan Söderberg.

Erik Gandini's approach through Surplus is to portray this issue from an emotional rather than a factual perspective

George W Bush's famous "shopping-speech" calling for a war against terrorism that deters the nation from the fear of consumption. Castro responding with hymns to the anti-consumerist, advertising-free island of Cuba. Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer preaching that the computer will give us peace on earth "bringing people together" while Adbuster Kalle Lasn warns that advertising pollutes us mentally, that over-consumption is unsustainable and that we are running out of oil.

Surplus main man is John Zerzan, controversial philosopher whose call for PROPERTY DAMAGE has inspired many to take to the streets. "That is not violence. Sitting there doing dope and watching MTV . Then you go and get a job. Just schlep along. To me that is violence," says Zerzan. "We are terrorized into being consumers."

In November 2003 Surplus was awarded with the prestigious prize “The Silver Wolf” at Amsterdam's IDFA, and has spread widely around the globe since then.

"... This film about consumerism totally consumed us. It used the language of music video, propaganda and commercial advertising as a response to the forces of globalisation. It fights fire with fire. The questions it raises are ultimately more important than any answers it might suggest. And we believe audiences can only profit from the debate that will ensue. For its originality, sense of humour, irony, forcefulness and visual virtuosity, the Silver Wolf Award goes to SURPLUS." The Jury of the International Documentary Filmfestival in Amsterdam, Nov.2003.

Kelly Nesbitt, gig

On this current 2006 European tour, Kelly will be presenting a different side of herself, singing her own songs on acoustic guitar.

Shannon Anti War Demonstration

A demonstration against the presence of the US military at Shannon airport will be held on Saturday, 28 October. This will be a protest and rally against the misuse of an Irish civilian airport and in solidarity with those who have suffered at the hands of the US war machine.

Several US Iraq War vets are expected to travel from the United States to participate in the demonstration, which will be the first at the airport this year. Among those expected to come to Shannon to register their objection to the presence of the US war machine will be Joshua Castell, a former US army interrogator at Abu Ghraib.

We want this to be a colourful and imaginative protest, so please bring homemade banners, placards and other symbols of your opposition to the so-called US 'war on terror'.

It is important that people travel for this protest and make their voices heard. Please attend and bring your kids, friends, grandmother and/or dog!
When: 2pm, Saturday, 28 October

Where: Assemble at Lidl's in Shannon town centre.

Organised by Anti-War Ireland

Revolt Video Cinema

Revolt Video Presents a showing of :

"The Last of the Zapatistas"

"Rossport Video Report by Revolt Video"

Plus "Political Music Video"

Time 7: 30 / Starts 8pm

Waged 5 euros/unwaged 3 euros

This Wednesday the 11th

Location:
@ Seomra Spraoi Social Centre
No 6 Lower Ormond Quay is on the north side quays, between capel street and swift's row. The entrance is a big blue metal door next to Snap Printing. Ring the top buzzer.

About "The Last of the Zapatistas" :

Forgotten Heroes is the chilling testimony of the soldiers who fought beside their General Emiliano Zapata in the 1910 Mexican Revolution. Almost one hundred years later, these survivors of the legendary Liberation Army of the South reveal a truth not to be found in any book. They speak of the failure of the Revolution and of today’s neoliberal governments, of the agrarian and ecological disaster threatening their country and of imminent civil war if the Zapatista ideals they represent continue to be ignored.

These men and women are chapters of unjust history, abandoned wisdom, banners for Mexico’s underprivileged .... they are the Forgotten Heroes.

(This documentary includes the historic encounter between members of the Zapatista National Liberation Army and the Zapatista veterans).

“That these forgotten heroes allowed me to share their knowledge was no easy task to achieve. Ninety years of lies and mockery on the part of the government had left the veterans wary and suspicious. Only after months of living with them were we able to establish a true friendship, and it was then that the documentary began”.
Francesco Taboada Tabone to “Il Venerdi di Repubblica”, Italy
