The Century of the Self is an acclaimed documentary by filmmaker Adam Curtis
Episode Three: There is a Policeman Inside All Our Heads: He Must Be Destroyed
Synopsis
In the 1960s, a radical group of psychotherapists challenged the influence of Freudian ideas in America. They were inspired by the ideas of Wilhelm Reich, a pupil of Freud's, who had turned against him and was hated by the Freud family. He believed that the inner self did not need to be repressed and controlled. It should be encouraged to express itself
Out of this came a political movement that sought to create new beings free of the psychological conformity that had been implanted in people's minds by business and politics.
This programme shows how this rapidly developed in America through self-help movements like Werber Erhard's Erhard Seminar Training - into the irresistible rise of the expressive self: the Me Generation.
But the American corporations soon realised that this new self was not a threat but their greatest opportunity. It was in their interest to encourage people to feel they were unique individuals and then sell them ways to express that individuality. To do this they turned to techniques developed by Freudian psychoanalysts to read the inner desires of the new self.

Surplus.-Terrorized Into Being Consumers
Synopsis
Why is the lifestyle of consumerism a source of such rage today? How come the privilege of buying goods does not automatically lead to happiness? Why all this emptiness despite our wealth? Surplus approach is to portray this issue from an emotional rather than a factual perspective, shot in the US, India, China, Italy, Sweden, Hungary, Canada and Cuba during three years. It is the result of a complicated editing process by talented music composer/editor/percussionist Johan Söderberg.
Erik Gandini's approach through Surplus is to portray this issue from an emotional rather than a factual perspective
George W Bush's famous "shopping-speech" calling for a war against terrorism that deters the nation from the fear of consumption. Castro responding with hymns to the anti-consumerist, advertising-free island of Cuba. Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer preaching that the computer will give us peace on earth "bringing people together" while Adbuster Kalle Lasn warns that advertising pollutes us mentally, that over-consumption is unsustainable and that we are running out of oil.
Surplus main man is John Zerzan, controversial philosopher whose call for PROPERTY DAMAGE has inspired many to take to the streets. "That is not violence. Sitting there doing dope and watching MTV . Then you go and get a job. Just schlep along. To me that is violence," says Zerzan. "We are terrorized into being consumers."
In November 2003 Surplus was awarded with the prestigious prize “The Silver Wolf” at Amsterdam's IDFA, and has spread widely around the globe since then.
"... This film about consumerism totally consumed us. It used the language of music video, propaganda and commercial advertising as a response to the forces of globalisation. It fights fire with fire. The questions it raises are ultimately more important than any answers it might suggest. And we believe audiences can only profit from the debate that will ensue. For its originality, sense of humour, irony, forcefulness and visual virtuosity, the Silver Wolf Award goes to SURPLUS." The Jury of the International Documentary Filmfestival in Amsterdam, Nov.2003.

Shannon Anti War Demonstration
A demonstration against the presence of the US military at Shannon airport will be held on Saturday, 28 October. This will be a protest and rally against the misuse of an Irish civilian airport and in solidarity with those who have suffered at the hands of the US war machine.
Several US Iraq War vets are expected to travel from the United States to participate in the demonstration, which will be the first at the airport this year. Among those expected to come to Shannon to register their objection to the presence of the US war machine will be Joshua Castell, a former US army interrogator at Abu Ghraib.
We want this to be a colourful and imaginative protest, so please bring homemade banners, placards and other symbols of your opposition to the so-called US 'war on terror'.
It is important that people travel for this protest and make their voices heard. Please attend and bring your kids, friends, grandmother and/or dog!
When: 2pm, Saturday, 28 October
Where: Assemble at Lidl's in Shannon town centre.
Organised by Anti-War Ireland

Revolt Video Presents a showing of :
"The Last of the Zapatistas"
"Rossport Video Report by Revolt Video"
Plus "Political Music Video"
Time 7: 30 / Starts 8pm
Waged 5 euros/unwaged 3 euros
This Wednesday the 11th
Location:
@ Seomra Spraoi Social Centre
No 6 Lower Ormond Quay is on the north side quays, between capel street and swift's row. The entrance is a big blue metal door next to Snap Printing. Ring the top buzzer.
About "The Last of the Zapatistas" :
Forgotten Heroes is the chilling testimony of the soldiers who fought beside their General Emiliano Zapata in the 1910 Mexican Revolution. Almost one hundred years later, these survivors of the legendary Liberation Army of the South reveal a truth not to be found in any book. They speak of the failure of the Revolution and of today’s neoliberal governments, of the agrarian and ecological disaster threatening their country and of imminent civil war if the Zapatista ideals they represent continue to be ignored.
These men and women are chapters of unjust history, abandoned wisdom, banners for Mexico’s underprivileged .... they are the Forgotten Heroes.
(This documentary includes the historic encounter between members of the Zapatista National Liberation Army and the Zapatista veterans).
“That these forgotten heroes allowed me to share their knowledge was no easy task to achieve. Ninety years of lies and mockery on the part of the government had left the veterans wary and suspicious. Only after months of living with them were we able to establish a true friendship, and it was then that the documentary began”.

Ungdomshuset Solidarity Banner Drop in Dublin
A banner drop on the Danish Embassy in Dublin, Ireland. In solidarity with the Ungdomshuset Social Centre in Copenhagen Denmark.
Video available to download via Video Indymedia : http://video.indymedia.org/en/2006/09/473.shtml
Solidarity demo with Ungdomshuset
On Wednesday, 20th of september, a short solidarity demo was held for Ungdomshuset, a 24 year old social centre in copenhagen which was secretly sold by the government to a right wing christian sect called faderhuset... meeting at the grafton street entrance to stephens green proceeded to the danish embassy which is very close by...
short message from the people defending the building at the moment:
The court has spoken and the verdict turned out in favor of Faderhuset. This means that they will try to shut down Ungdomshuset and establish their rightwing Christian fundamentalist group in OUR house. We do not acknowledge their so-called justice system! There will never be anything but Ungdomshuset in that house and therefore we will do anything in our power to defend it!
On the 23rd + 24th we hit the streets to show them that we are many, that we are powerful and that we will NOT be ignored!
It is no longer a matter of IF we are going to fight for the house, but rather WHEN! But WE decide when it's time to fight - therefore the demonstrations will be non-confrontative.
Copenhagen is not the only city under attack! Houses all over Europe are currently being evicted or “normalized”!
A brief account of the Saturday the 23rd March :
On the 23rd of September a march of over 3000 people took place in Copenhagen leaving from outisde Ungdomshuset and marching through the streets and passed city hall where the crowd stoped to stick their fingers up at the beaurcrats who sold the social centre . The march was filled with kids , bikes , dogs , old people , punks and anarchists just to name a few showing the diversity of people who support this social centre . There shall be a video to follow showing this event .
A chant of "Evict our house and start a war" was heard ....

New Revolt Documentary "The Political Economy of Genocide"
One Race the Human Race
Part I: The Political Economy of Genocide
Documentary (Duration 42 mins)
This short film by no means tries to give a what, when, where, who and how analysis of the conflict taking place in the Lebanon, Palestine and Israeli (Iraq). It is a collection of mostly images and video taken off various Indymedia sites around the world and merged together to give an incomplete and brief snap shot montage sequence of the consequences of state violence and apathy to the suffering of human beings for narrow selfish political reasons.
Dedicated to IMC journalists in Lebanon, Palestine and Israel.

Transcripts of some of the narration
“All authority of any kind, especially in the field of thought and understanding, is the most destructive of things. Leaders destroy their followers, followers destroy their leaders. You have to be your own teacher and your own disciple. You have to question everything that man has accepted as valuable, as necessary.”
“For centuries we have been conditioned by nationality, cast, class, tradition, religion, language, education, literature, art, custom, convention, propaganda of all kinds, economic pressure, our experiences- every influence you can think of – and therefore, our responses to every problem are conditioned.”
“When you call yourself an Indian or Muslim or a Christian or European, or anything else, you are being violent. Do you see why it is violent? Because you are separating yourself from the rest of mankind. When you are separating yourself by belief, by nationality, by tradition, it breeds violence. So a man or woman who is seeking to understand violence does not belong to any political party or partial system: he is concerned with the understanding of mankind.”
“Words are cheap when used to describe the ongoing slaughter and destruction in Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine and at the hands of the US and the US-funded Israeli army. No matter how eloquent or expressive, words stand helpless and ring hollow when confronted with the distressing human suffering inflicted on Iraqi, Lebanese and Palestinian civilians by war machines and the utter apathy, even indifference, of world powers towards them.”
“The Israeli side has attempted to market this campaign of death and destruction in Lebanon and Palestine as "self-defense" intended to "defend peace," in the words of Shimon Peres, who in 1996 gave the orders to bomb a UNIFIL post in Qana, South Lebanon, where hundreds of civilians had sought refuge. That attack burned 106 Lebanese civilians to death, also in the name of Israeli "self-defense." Israeli officials have also allowed themselves the audacity of speaking on behalf of the Lebanese and Palestinian peoples they are assaulting. In the UN, the Israeli representative Ambassador Dan Gillerman was able to lecture the Security Council with a straight face about the right of the Palestinian and Lebanese peoples to live in peace and prosperity”
“To top off this shameless Israeli public diplomacy campaign, Ms. Tzipi Livni, the Israeli Foreign Minister, states repeatedly, without the slightest embarrassment, that her country's assault on Lebanon is meant to "help" the Lebanese government exercise its sovereignty and implement Security Council resolution 1559! Unfortunately, she has yet to be asked how the bombing of Lebanese bridges and roads, army barracks, and communications antennas is meant to help the government nor how infringing upon the sovereignty of Lebanon is meant to solidify that country's sovereignty. More importantly, this shocking remark did not invite a response that would remind the Israeli official that her country infringed upon Lebanon's sovereignty through land, air, and sea over 11,000 times in the past six years.”
”The crowning jewel of this crisis, with its twisted logic and perverse objectives, is the statement of the US Secretary of State, calling the current carnage "the birth pangs of a new Middle East." These "pangs" of a foreign-grown and forcibly implanted pregnancy are more like deafening "bangs" that shatter the homes, hopes, and future of Lebanese and Palestinian children. They are the blows Ms. Rice is allowing to continue to burn, maim and kill civilians in Lebanon and Palestine. Ms. Rice's "new" Middle East is being molded by the charred remains of children and their hopes for a dignified life in Palestine and Lebanon.”

The Edukators – Your Days of Plenty are Numbered
Synopsis
Jule is a waitress that can't make ends meet. She moves in with her boyfriend Peter and his friend Jan, two young men united by their passion to change the world. But Jule has a secret: A past auto accident has burdened her with lifetime payments to successful businessman, Hardenberg. Peter and Jan also have a secret: They are the notorious "Edukators," mysterious perpetrators who break into expensive homes of the local yacht club members as an act of political rebellion. They wreak havoc and leave notes that read, "Your days of plenty are numbered."
While Peter is away on holiday, secrets between Jan and Jules are disclosed and feelings between them intensify. They impulsively break into the home of the businessman to whom Jules is indebted. But their growing passion has made them careless and when they're forced to return to the villa the following night to retrieve a forgotten cell phone, Hardenberg surprises them.
They have no choice but to call Peter for help, even if it means his finding out about their betrayal.
The trio makes a rash decision and their futures (as well as Hardenberg's) are quaked. Ideals are tested as generations collide, passions rage, and loyalties shatter.

Launch of Video Activist Collective:
Revolt Video is a video activist collective set up to provide footage of political events happening in Ireland and internationally, covering the whole spectrum of social change. The collective works on the same principle as Indymedia, and alongside it will provide footage and less heard voices on issues which other mainstream media outlets ignore, often due to owners vested interests such as advertising and profit.
There are plans to provide ongoing workshops in the future once a secure location is obtained. With this physical presence we can also focus on the distribution of independent films and activist media. Recently the collective has held numerous screenings such as those at the Anarchist Bookfair in Dublin, various concerts and benefits, and will also be holding screenings at the new Indymedia film nights in Dublin (http://www.indymedia.ie).
Revolt is there to encourage people to report on issues and events which affect them. Members of the collective propose projects which are discussed and created collectively, with each person working with their strengths whether it is filming or editing etc. It is run on a non-profit basis, all money raised is reinvested into future projects and equipment.
Revolt video volume one is currently available directly from Revolt by emailing revoltvideo@hushmail.com. You can order one copy or multiples if you want to distribute in your community or school. Our films are also available in Connolly Books in Dublin You can view footage and obtain more information on Revolt Video Collective by visiting http://www.revoltvideo.blogspot.com
